Market Definition
GAII Intelligence defines the AI Research & Intelligence market as software that applies generative and agentic AI to the research process of professional investors: locating candidate securities, assembling and interrogating evidence, producing written analysis with traceable sources, and monitoring positions once held. Buyers are hedge funds, long-only managers, multi-manager platforms, family offices and allocators; the economic buyer is typically the chief technology officer, the head of research, or a portfolio manager with a technology budget.
Capabilities we treat as mandatory
- Evidence retrieval at scale: the ability to search and reason across regulatory filings, transcripts and news, and across documents the client supplies.
- Source traceability: every material claim in an output must be reachable back to the passage that supports it.
- Institutional data handling: a stated position on where client data goes, how long it is held, and whether it is used for model training.
Capabilities we treat as differentiating
- Persistent state: the system remembers a thesis, a coverage list or a position between sessions and acts on it without being re-prompted.
- Workflow surfaces: delivery inside the applications analysts already use — the spreadsheet, the research management system, email and messaging.
- Owned or exclusive content: material that a competitor cannot obtain by signing the same third-party contract.
- Published evaluation: a measured, disclosed accuracy methodology rather than an assertion of quality.
Portrait competes in the buy-side segment of this market, focused on fundamental equity managers. Its closest functional comparisons in our coverage are LinqAlpha, also buy-side native, and Samaya AI for agentic research over licensed content. It does not compete directly with Rogo, whose centre of gravity is investment banking, or with Daloopa, which supplies structured fundamentals rather than analysis.
Strengths
The following are the capabilities and characteristics that, in our assessment, most distinguish Portrait within the AI Research & Intelligence market. Each is drawn from publicly documented product capability, published interviews with management, or independent hands-on review.
- Buy-side native design: The product follows the analyst's own sequence — find the idea, frame the debate, monitor the position — and was built by investors from Baupost, Citadel and Millennium. In our assessment it remains the closest fit to the fundamental long/short process in the cohort.
- Persistent thesis monitoring: Thesis, datapoint and event monitors test a named position continuously against new filings, transcripts and news. Monitoring elsewhere in our coverage is typically a saved search rather than a maintained position.
- Universe-scale ranking: Mosaic applies quantitative gates, writes a qualitative dossier on each company and ranks the universe against the firm's own framework. It turns a single-name tool into a process tool.
- Audited security posture: The security page states an annual SOC 2 Type 2 examination covering the Security category and annual independent penetration testing, with a detailed control description (AWS KMS, Security Hub, environment separation in Auth0 and AWS). This is a meaningful step for a company of this size.
- Agent-ready delivery: An OAuth MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT, a CLI, a Partner API and Slack, Teams and email delivery let research reach analysts in the tools they already use.
- Documentation discipline: Public documentation carries review dates, explicit entitlement rules and a documented credits model — unusually transparent for the category.
- Low-friction evaluation: A one-week firm trial, an email-only trial of Easel and a paid Mosaic trial of up to 20 companies make it easy to test against live coverage.
Cautions
The following are factors that prospective clients should weigh, and areas where our public review did not find sufficient evidence to reach a settled view. Several are common across vendors at this stage of the market and are not specific to Portrait. We encourage prospective clients to raise each of them directly with the company; we have done the same, and will update this note as answers arrive.
- Leadership continuity: A July 2026 interview describes Eric Moster as chief executive; David Plon held the role through at least February 2026 and his current role is not stated publicly. We did not locate a company announcement. Prospective clients should confirm the leadership team and governance.
- Funding and scale: No priced financing has been disclosed since the $7m seed in July 2023, and headcount is reported at 13–19. The company reports seven-figure ARR growing about four times year on year. Firms planning multi-year commitments should discuss runway.
- Data governance: We did not locate a commitment that client data is not used for model training; the master services agreement allows customer data to be used to create service data that improves the product. Model providers and subprocessors are not named. Prospective clients should seek explicit contract language.
- Enterprise controls: SSO/SAML, private-cloud or single-tenant deployment, data-residency choice and a trust centre were not located. The SOC 2 auditor and report period are not stated; the report is available on request.
- Content entitlements: Visible Alpha depth and Third Bridge access depend on the firm's own agreements with each provider, and broker research is not offered. Buyers should budget for licences alongside the platform.
- Cost predictability: Pricing is not published. Seats sit alongside two credit balances, monitors reserve credits in advance, and Mosaic has no pay-as-you-go fallback. Custom deployments are reported at four to five times the core platform.
- Contract protections: The master services agreement offers commercially reasonable efforts without an SLA, and caps liability at twelve months' fees outside security and data-use breaches. This is common at this stage but worth negotiating.
- Evaluation evidence: No benchmark or independent accuracy measurement has been published, and no customer is named publicly.
Company Profile
Portrait Analytics, Inc. was founded in 2022 by David Plon, a former buy-side analyst at Baupost Group and Slate Path Capital, and Connell Gough, previously a full-stack engineer at EquipmentShare. It exited stealth in April 2023 and trades as Portrait Analytics. The company moved from Boston to New York, where its registered address is 1115 Broadway.
Portrait raised a $3m pre-seed led by .406 Ventures in April 2023 and a $7m seed led by Unusual Ventures in July 2023, $10m in total; no later round has been located. A July 2026 interview describes Eric Moster, formerly in product roles at Citadel and Millennium, as chief executive, and reports about 13 staff, nine of them engineers. The company reports more than 100 client firms with over $550bn in assets under management.

Product and Capabilities
Portrait now presents four working surfaces across the research process, plus developer access through an MCP server, CLI and Partner API. Figure 2 sets out our assessment of how the product maps onto the fundamental equity workflow.
Screening and Monitors
Qualitative screening across a stated company universe, and persistent thesis, datapoint and event monitors that test a position continuously against incoming filings, transcripts and news.
Deep Research and Company Research
Multi-step research with claim-level citations, company primers, price-replay case studies and business-relationship maps.
Easel
An AI analyst that builds multi-sheet financial models, memos and IC briefs, with reusable Skills, Projects and Memory, scheduled research, and delivery by Slack, Teams or email.
Mosaic
Runs a firm's framework across a whole universe: quantitative gates first, then a qualitative dossier per company, then a ranking. Historical runs support backtesting.
Scope of the product today
We did not locate an Excel add-in, a research-management-system integration or broker research. The "Intelligence" tier described in earlier materials now appears as Custom deployments built by Portrait engineers. A PitchBook integration flagged for early 2026 was not located as live.

AI and Technology
Portrait's agents decompose a research question, retrieve across filings, transcripts and licensed sources, and cite each claim to the supporting passage. Mosaic adds a universe-scale pipeline. The platform runs on AWS with Auth0 identity, and Easel runs in Portrait's cloud. Engineering makes up about nine of thirteen staff.
Disclosure is the area where we would like to see more. Portrait does not name its model providers, has published no benchmark or error rate, and its claim that Third Bridge content reduced hallucinations rests on internal tests.
Data and Content
Sources include SEC and foreign filings, earnings transcripts, presentations, news excerpts, 13F holdings, supply-chain relationships, podcasts, FRED macro data and the live web. Licensed content comes from Third Bridge expert interviews, Visible Alpha consensus and KPIs, FactSet documents and S&P market data, alongside the client's own documents.
Prospective clients should note that Visible Alpha and Third Bridge access follows each firm's own agreement with the provider, that some licensed sources are not exposed through MCP, and that broker research is not offered.
Investment Workflow Fit
This is where Portrait earns its place in the coverage universe. Screening, monitoring and deep research follow the analyst's sequence, and Mosaic now carries that sequence across a whole universe. Easel closes the gap to the deliverable with models and memos.
The consideration on the other side is delivery into existing systems. Output arrives in the browser, the iOS app, Slack, Teams or email and through MCP, but we did not locate an Excel add-in or a research-management-system integration, both of which the company described earlier as roadmap.
Enterprise Readiness
Portrait's security page states an annual SOC 2 Type 2 examination covering the Security category, annual third-party penetration testing, encryption with AWS KMS, organisation-boundary isolation and per-request entitlement checks. Figure 3 sets out what our public review located.

We would encourage any firm evaluating Portrait to request the SOC 2 report and confirm its period and auditor, then establish the no-training position in contract, the model providers and subprocessors, SSO/SAML availability and whether Custom deployments include single-tenant or private-cloud options.
The offsetting factors are real. A SOC 2 Type 2 examination and annual penetration testing are more than many peers at this stage publish, the control description is specific, and the master services agreement commits to at least $3m of cyber and errors-and-omissions insurance.
Commercial Model
Portrait does not publish pricing. The core platform is sold per seat with credit allowances, and Custom deployments are sold firm-wide at an entry price reported at four to five times the core platform. Monitors and scheduled research reserve credits in advance, and Mosaic has no pay-as-you-go fallback.
The value argument remains analyst-time substitution, and the one-week firm trial is among the most accessible in our coverage. Buyers should model seats, credits and content licences together before committing.
Competitive Position
Portrait sits in the Emerging quadrant of the GAII Intelligence Matrix: investment utility on product and workflow sits below the line once content gaps are weighed, and market and innovation strength is held back by capital position, model disclosure and enterprise evidence.

GAII coverage universe, 21 October 2026. Scores as currently published on the GAII Intelligence page; preliminary and based on public information.
11.1 Where Portrait is strongest relative to peers
- Against document-analysis platforms, on the shape of the buy-side workflow: screening, monitoring and research follow the analyst's sequence rather than a document corpus.
- Against content platforms, on persistent thesis monitoring and universe-wide ranking against a firm's own framework.
- Against general-purpose assistants, on citation discipline and documented entitlement rules.
11.2 Areas of narrower functional focus
Portrait has built depth in the research process rather than breadth of content or desktop presence.
- Content: no broker research; premium sources depend on the firm's own licences.
- Desktop: no Excel add-in or research-management-system integration located.
- Enterprise: no SSO, private-cloud deployment or no-training commitment located.
- Scale: small team and no financing disclosed since 2023.

Open Questions
These are the areas where our public review did not find sufficient evidence to form a settled view. We have put them to the company and will update this note when they are answered. Prospective clients may find them a useful agenda for their own evaluation call.
- Confirmation of the current chief executive, the date of the transition, and David Plon's current role.
- Whether capital has been raised since July 2023, and current runway.
- The SOC 2 report period and auditor.
- Whether a no-training commitment can be included in the contract, and which model providers are used.
- The subprocessor list.
- Availability of SSO/SAML and SCIM.
- What Custom deployments include, and whether single-tenant or private-cloud options are available.
- Pricing for seats, credits and Custom deployments, and typical contract terms.
- Retention metrics and the proportion of the 100+ firms that are paying.
- Timing for Excel, research-management-system and PitchBook integrations.
- Plans for broker and sell-side research.
- Two customer references available under non-disclosure.
Context — How To Use This Research
This note is an assessment of a vendor against a defined framework, not a recommendation to buy or to decline. The following are the considerations we would put at the centre of an evaluation of Portrait specifically.
If you are a fundamental equity manager
- Run the one-week trial against live coverage and judge thesis monitors and Mosaic rankings on your own names.
- Map which of your Visible Alpha and Third Bridge entitlements carry over before pricing.
- Test Easel's models against your own templates to gauge how much reformatting remains.
If you are responsible for technology or vendor risk
- Open with Figure 3 and request the SOC 2 report alongside the items not located.
- Seek contract language that excludes training on client data and names the model providers.
- Confirm identity integration (SSO/SCIM) and deployment isolation before a firmwide rollout.
If you are assessing the category rather than the company
- Persistent thesis monitoring remains the clearest differentiator among buy-side research vendors.
- Small vendors can now evidence SOC 2 Type 2; the gap is moving to governance terms and deployment options.
- Universe-scale agents that apply a firm's own framework are emerging as the next step beyond single-name research.

Methodology
The GAII Intelligence Framework scores every company in coverage on six dimensions, each built from sub-criteria. Evidence is weighted in descending order: verifiable primary evidence such as attestations, contracts, published documentation and named references; then the company's completed GAII questionnaire and analyst briefing; then public secondary sources. Claims that cannot be corroborated are recorded as company-reported and do not raise a score.
| 1. Product Capability | 20% | What the product does: workflow breadth, output quality, agentic autonomy, usability, fidelity of deliverables, configurability. |
| 2. AI & Technology | 20% | How it is built: model strategy and provider dependency, retrieval and reasoning, citation fidelity, published evaluation, engineering depth, shipping velocity. |
| 3. Data & Content | 17.5% | What it knows: filings and transcripts, expert content, broker research, consensus data, client-material ingestion, coverage and auditability. |
| 4. Investment Workflow Fit | 17.5% | How it fits the process: buy-side design, idea generation, monitoring, modelling, delivery surfaces, adoption support. |
| 5. Enterprise Readiness | 15% | Whether it can be bought: certifications, deployment, data governance, access control, compliance, vendor viability, support. |
| 6. Commercial Value | 10% | Whether it is worth it: price transparency, total cost of ownership, value against the alternative, contract flexibility, return evidence, pricing alignment. |
Rating bands
| 8.5 – 10.0 | Leader | Category-defining capability with the platform maturity to support standardisation across a firm. |
| 7.5 – 8.4 | Strong | Suitable for enterprise deployment following normal diligence. |
| 6.5 – 7.4 | Established | Credible for targeted deployment, with specific areas to clarify during evaluation. |
| 5.5 – 6.4 | Emerging | Well suited to pilot deployment while particular capabilities continue to develop. |
| Below 5.5 | Specialist | Deliberately narrow functional focus, or areas we are still evaluating. |
Outlook definitions: Improving — we expect the overall score to rise at the next review on evidence already visible. Stable — no directional change expected within two review cycles. Softening — we expect the score to decline on competitive, commercial or execution evidence. Under Evaluation — material questions remain open; the score may move in either direction once they are resolved.
Matrix construction: Investment Utility (horizontal) = Product Capability × 0.40 + Data & Content × 0.30 + Investment Workflow Fit × 0.30. Market & Innovation Strength (vertical) = AI & Technology × 0.40 + Enterprise Readiness × 0.35 + Momentum × 0.25, where Momentum is a separate 0–10 assessment of capital position, traction, growth and strategic backing. Quadrant boundaries sit at 7.50 on both axes for the current cohort and are restated at each quarterly review.
