Smarsh
Smarsh captures, archives and supervises electronic communications across more than 100 channels for financial firms and public bodies, with AI surveillance from its Digital Reasoning acquisition, discovery tools and new agents for alert triage and search.
www.smarsh.com ↗Smarsh is the scale incumbent in communications capture and archiving. It reports 6,500+ customers including most of the largest global banks, captures more than 100 channels — from email and Teams to WhatsApp, voice and AI assistants such as Copilot and Claude — and processes over 40 million messages a day. Gartner named it a Leader for digital communications governance and archiving in 2025. Its AI layer, built on the Digital Reasoning acquisition, now includes a level-one triage agent in production, a discovery agent and an MCP server.
Governance disclosure and a security incident weigh on the rating. In May 2025 TeleMessage, a Smarsh subsidiary whose modified Signal app was used by US officials, was breached; services were suspended and CISA listed its vulnerabilities as exploited. SOC 2 type, a no-training policy, subprocessors and residency beyond Canada were not located, and there is no trade surveillance. Pricing is opaque and reviews cite exit fees.
We initiate at 6.65, Established, with a Stable outlook. Workflow Fit (7.50) and Data & Content (7.42), on the segment variant, are strengths; Enterprise Readiness (5.93) and Commercial Value (4.83) hold it back. Published governance documentation would move the score most.
